About Maya
A social worker by training, I spent 7 years on the frontlines of public healthcare in mental health and substance use. My passion lies in creating a space where everyone is seen and affirmed for all their beauty and messiness.
Having spent the better part of the past twelve years in and out of therapy, I understand how tricky it can feel to choose a counsellor that aligns with your values and goals. Before we dive into your story, here's a little about mine:
I am an only child and have been told I have only-child syndrome. I don’t really know what that is, but no one says it as though it’s a compliment. I have a massive sweet tooth and have been known to have cake for breakfast on more than one occasion. As an introvert, I probably won’t attend anything that starts after 7pm. Most importantly, though, I never grew out of the “why?” phase of being a kid. I became a counsellor because it felt like a natural fit for my innate curiosity to know what motivates people, and how we can use our past to craft our future.
Relationships Monogamous & Non-Monogamous
I approach relationship therapy with the belief that there is no "right" way to foster a partnership. My focus is on providing support to you and your partner(s) by helping you develop effective communication tools, deepen emotional understanding, and explore your boundaries.
We can identify patterns in your relationship, initiate conversations about opening your relationship, create a relationship agreement, explore various relationship structures and relational identities, develop and enhance communication strategies and emotional connections, establish and negotiate boundaries and navigate infidelity.
While I have a strong interest in non-monogamous relationships, I welcome therapy sessions for partnerships of all kinds that are seeking support in overcoming challenges.
Exploring Non-Monogamy
I understand how you may want to explore a relationship style aligned with your values and curiosities and at the same time, your nervous system doesn’t feel like it’s on board. It’s a dilemma I’ve wrestled with myself!
I know the damage that can be done by a therapist who tries to define your experience before you have a chance. Whether you’re struggling with non-monogamy and want space to decide to pivot - or want to face those challenges head on, I’ve got you.
Together, we can explore what works for you, better understand yourself and your relationships, navigate challenges when they arise, and create space to celebrate the ways you choose to connect and love.
Sex, Kink & BDSM
Through my own personal experiences, I’ve come to realize the value of having open discussions about sex, free of shame or fear. We live in a world that tends to be pretty uncomfortable talking about sex; particularly elements of sex and sexuality that fall outside the dominant narratives of sexuality, gender and relationships. I’m committed to changing that narrative in my therapy room - bring me your musings about your identity, what turns you on, what confuses you and what you long for; it’s all welcome.
Kink has shown me what a playground life can feel like, an endless exploration of flavours, rather than the limited menu we’re often presented in sex. This makes me love working with folks in exploration - who don’t know what they want yet.
For those who consider kink as an integral part of their being - I would like to know more about the meaning it holds for you and if it’s playing the role you want it to. I won’t make assumptions.
Sex Work and the Adult Entertainment Industry
I understand that sometimes this is who you are, and sometimes it is simply what you do. I will never assume how big or small of a role this experience plays in your life, and recognize the impact of this work extends from physical to emotional, mental and spiritual. We can explore how you tend to your own wellbeing while doing this work, how you protect yourself and how you share (or don’t) this experience with others in your life.
Body Image and Self-Worth
Social beauty and body standards can be incredibly violent, and because they are so normalized it can feel like an insurmountable challenge to confront them. I understand how it can feel like you have to harm your body to accept it and therefore have disbelief that you’ll be accepted and loved by anyone else.
I’ve researched genetics and body science to understand the realistic limitations on changing our body size and I feel rage for the lies we’ve been told. Together we can disentangle the way you feel about yourself and your body from the way the world expects or wants you to show up.
How I Work
We will likely work well together if you are looking for someone who is direct and will challenge you, yet is also laid back and committed to fostering a genuine relationship with you (bonus points if you end up swearing before I do).
While I draw from a variety of models of care, it is most important that you feel I am engaged and present with you in the moment. I utilize several approaches, including:
- Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
- Narrative therapy and Motivational Interviewing
- Various frameworks for sex therapy including sex-positive and kink-affirming care
- Relationship therapy models such as Emotion-Focused Therapy and the Gottman method
- Harm Reduction Frameworks
- Trauma-informed and Strengths-Based care
My space is created to be chill and comfortable, allowing you to focus on yourself and your story. I welcome any questions you might have about me as a person as well.
My Values
It is important to me to acknowledge that my life has been shaped by intersecting identities and experiences that may look very different from yours. My commitment is to ensure my life never becomes the 'template' you are expected to fit. I constantly check my lens and privileges to fill in gaps in my understanding. My values are rooted in anti-oppressive practice and understanding that complex systems of violence impact our sense of self, community, wellbeing, and safety. I believe in an approach that identifies and names systemic violence while responding with critical hope. My core values are critical self-reflection, collaboration, community building, critical hope, naming and challenging systems, consent, playfulness, and curiosity.
